Tanzania is one of the biggest African countries, in terms of size (947 000 Km2) and population (42 million). The GDP per capita is USD 1,500 PPP, which ranks Tanzania 198th in the world and 32nd in Africa. The Human Development Index is 0.466, below the Sub-Saharan Africa average 0.463, which ranks Tanzania 30th in Africa.
Tanzania’s GDP recorded an average growth rate of about 7 percent over the 2001-2010 period. This impressive growth did not, however, have a significant impact on poverty reduction. The incidence of poverty varies greatly across the country but is highest among rural families living in arid and semi-arid regions that depend exclusively on livestock and food crop production. However, evidence suggests that the poor have increased their access to publicly provided social services such as education and health, indicating that some benefits of growth have been re-distributed in favour of the poor. The challenge ahead is to ensure that the economy continues to register impressive growth and to make sure that such growth is also pro-poor, inherently or through re-distribution.
